Why Paid Ads Need Conversions to Optimize
Correct campaign settings are not enough. Google Ads and Meta Ads need conversion data so their algorithms can optimize effectively.

You can complete a course, reproduce the recommended campaign settings and get the technical setup right, yet still receive very expensive leads—or no leads at all. In this situation, the problem may not be a specific setting inside the ad platform. It can be the overall approach to paid advertising.
The core idea is simple: advertising should be built around conversions, while the algorithms need enough conversion data to optimize.
Correct campaign settings are not enough
A proper campaign structure matters, but it does not guarantee results on its own. Advertising should move users toward a specific conversion: a lead, purchase or another target action that genuinely matters to the business.
The website is the second part of the system. When ads send traffic to a website, that site needs to do its job properly: communicate the offer, guide visitors toward the target action and correctly record conversions.
This creates a chain. The campaign attracts a potential customer, the website helps that person complete the desired action, and the advertising system receives information about the result. If one part of this chain does not work correctly, it becomes harder for the algorithm to understand which users it should find.
Algorithms need conversion data
Even with a reasonably correct setup, one or two conversions per day may not provide enough data for stable optimization. With limited conversion volume, the advertising platform receives relatively few signals about which users actually become customers.
As a practical benchmark, around five conversions per day can be considered for Google Ads search campaigns. For Meta Ads, the benchmark discussed here is around 50 conversions per week. The point is not to treat these numbers as the only requirement for a successful campaign. The important principle is that an algorithm needs sufficient target-event volume.
The more useful conversion signals the system receives, the more information it has to identify similar users and improve its optimization.
Why low conversion volume can mean expensive leads
When conversions are scarce, the advertising system has limited information about who is most likely to complete the target action. As a result, acquiring a customer can remain expensive even when the campaign's basic settings appear correct.
That is why campaign launches should be evaluated beyond the settings inside the advertising account. Check which conversion the campaign is optimizing for, whether the website works correctly, whether target actions are being recorded properly, and whether the available budget can generate enough data.
With sufficient conversion volume, the system has more opportunities to optimize the campaign, identify the right audience and gradually reduce customer acquisition costs.
Understanding this logic makes paid advertising easier to approach. Technical details, campaign structures and advanced optimization come with practice and experience, but the foundation remains the same: advertising needs reliable conversion data that gives the algorithm something meaningful to learn from.
